Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has come out with an apology after his team suffered an embarrassing 7-1 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Roma came into the group stage match with real hope of getting three points since they were playing in front of their own supporters.

The 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the previous round has given them hope of reaching the knockout stages. Bayern are the undisputed favourites to win the group, but a victory against the Germans would put Roma in a great position for qualification.

However, they suffered a 7-1 humiliation including a 5-0 score at half-time. This coupled with Manchester City’s solitary point against CSKA Moscow in an away match sees the advantage go towards the Premier League outfit. More importantly, this threatens to destroy the good run of form built up by the Italian outfit this season.

Roma have been challenging with Juventus for the title with a great run, but they only recently suffered a nailbiting 3-2 defeat against the current champions in the league. Roma are still ahead of City in the group stages, but they have had just one win so far. Their next match is also against Bayern but this time at the Allianz Arena.

“We are sorry for our supporters. It was like a dagger into the heart for them. The whole city was waiting for this game. Bayern have 90% of the team who won the World Cup, but we could have done better. They were physically better than us,” said De Rossi. Arjen Robben scored twice in the first half while the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, and Mario Gotze also joined in the act. Roma did have some good opportunities in the opening few minutes of the second half, but they were unable to score apart from the consolation from Gervinho.
