Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has come out with an apology after his team suffered an embarrassing 7-1 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Roma came into the group stage match with real hope of getting three points since they were playing in front of their own supporters.

The 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the previous round has given them hope of reaching the knockout stages. Bayern are the undisputed favourites to win the group, but a victory against the Germans would put Roma in a great position for qualification.

  • Owen: England must attack

Former England striker Michael Owen believes Roy Hodgson must look to attack if he wants his side to impress at this summer’s World Cup.

Hodgson has received wide-ranging praise for his decision to include a number of exciting youngsters in his 23 and although the Three Lions are by no means expected to win the tournament.

With England 33/1 with Paddy Power to win the World Cup, there appears to be a quiet optimism surrounding the squad.

Since 2004, Petr Cech has been the undisputed first choice goalkeeper of Chelsea as the veteran shot-stopper continues to play at world-class levels which have helped the Premier League on being on one of top spots of the English league.

The 31 years old goalkeeper has even helped Chelsea on lifting the Champions League as they defeated Barcelona in 2011 and Cech played a crucial role as he denied Messi and the rest of the attacking forces of the Spanish club from scoring.

  • United Have a Mountain to Climb

At 19:45 this evening, Manchester United will face Greek club, Olympiakos, at Old Trafford, hoping to become the second team from England to progress to the last eight of the Champions League.

Fans who are gambling on the game with Betfair know that United are in a bad way – on the surface, at least. The Reds are heading into the clash two goals down on aggregate, courtesy of strikes from Alejandro Dominguez and Joel Campbell, with a recent 3-0 defeat to bitter rivals, Liverpool, standing as a microcosm of their luck on the football pitch so far this season.

  • And the winners of the 2014 World Cup are…

So which nation will be lifting the greatest prize in football next July 13th at the world famous Maracanã Stadium stadium in Rio de Janeiro?

Having won the World Cup on a record five occasions – home advantage will surely tip things in Brazil’s favour to make it a sixth? If you believe the bookmakers’ odds it will be Brazil at around 3/1. This is understandable. Brazil are, without any shadow of a doubt, the strongest nation in the history of football.

Italy’s Daniele De Rossi was one of the major omissions from the squad for the friendly match against Spain on Wednesday. This was one of the few matches to prepare for Italy ahead of the World Cup 2014.

However, Cesare Prandelli omitted De Rossi from the squad on the grounds of indiscipline. Roma were recently involved in a league match with Inter Milan and during that encounter De Rossi punched Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi in the face. This has led to a straight red card and a three match ban for the midfielder. Roma only managed a 0-0 draw with Inter Milan in that match.

  • ROAR WIN 2-1

Brisbane Roar edged a 2-1 victory over Adelaide United on March 8 as they played at the Suncorp Stadium and the positive result for Brisbane Roar has given them a 10 point lead over their nearest rivals.

The head coach of the club, Mike Mulvey stated that they have worked hard in order to get at the top of the league.

“Yes, we’ve got a bit of a lead, we accept that situation gladly” he told a Sports News website.

Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has said that the mentality shown by his team in this season has been quite brilliant. After being considered as challengers for the top three positions, Roma are now considered as a challenger for the title.

David Moyes recently revealed that he tried to sign the defensive midfielder Daniele de Rossi from As.Roma as he was a high profile target that could have solved some of their current problems.

Moyes said: “We certainly did think in the summer about bringing him here.I don’t think it went as far as a bid, because I think there was something to do with a deadline on his contract. But yes, he was a player we thought was a good player.”

Roma have made a surprising start to the season, which has seen them win all of their matches until now. This rather brilliant start has also put them top of the table. Not many expected them to make this kind of start after selling a number of key players in the summer, while also appointing former Lille Rudi Garcia.

Even though one of the main reasons for this brilliant start has been the form of veteran Francesco Totti, one of the important members of the team – Daniele De Rossi – believes that the club should be feared by other teams in the league.
